Shipboard Research and Data Tracking Enclosures

Sea Education Association EIC protects marine reseach equipment about the SSV Corwith Cramer(SEA) of Woods Hole, MA, is an internationally recognized leader in undergraduate education programs focused on the ocean. Since 1971, nearly 8,000 alumni, spanning a variety of career fields, have completed its study abroad program, SEA Semester. Approximately 25 students and 10-14 professional crew members join each voyage. SEA’s fleet of ships carries sensitive research equipment on deck that is essential to collecting important data on coral reef ecology, biodiversity, climate dynamics and marine geology. This equipment is subject to harsh, corrosive conditions including high ambient temperatures, salt, fog, and sea spray. This equipment includes:

  • Rack Mounted PCs
  • Chirp Sub-Bottom Profiling System, used for mapping bathymetry
  • Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), used to track water currents

Sea Education Association contacted EIC Solutions, Inc. in 2002 to house and protect the critical electronic equipment onboard the SSV Corwith Cramer. This equipment is the centerpiece of the science lab and houses a variety of crucial components. The system also supports shipboard operations allowing scientists and students to collect a wide range of oceanographic data, which is key to the success of SEA’s programs.

Protector™ Rack Series Air Conditioned Enclosure - Front View, Door Open

“Thanks to EIC Solutions entire engineering team, exceptional service as always!”
Georgie Z., Science Operations Coordinator

Because marine environments are exceptionally challenging for fragile electronics due to corrosive properties in the air and water as well as wide temperature variations, a solution was needed that would both house and thermally control the equipment. EIC provided a set of thermoelectrically air-conditioned enclosures that offered protection during regular operation in addition to ship blackout events.

This year the vessel needed a major upgrade. Because of EIC Solution’s proven track record, SEA contacted us again to purchase updated air-conditioned enclosures. The new design featured custom rack rails that were narrower by 0.5” on each side compared to standard rails, allowing the air-conditioned enclosures to be moved through the vessel’s narrow watertight door, while still allowing the maximum amount of storage within the enclosures. These custom rack enclosures included:

  • White Powder Coated Steel Rack Enclosures (NEMA 4 Construction)
  • Customized Cable Exits for Power Cord Conduits on Enclosures
  • Integral ThermoTEC Series 800 BTU-Solid State Air Conditioners (NEMA 4X Construction)
  • Condensate Management System
  • 120 VAC Power

Integrating EIC’s solid state, air-conditioned enclosures continues to allow Sea Education Association to reduce the risk of downtime and heat-related failure of their critical equipment. This ensures the oceanographic data equipment will run without interruption.

AAC-141-4XT-E-HC-NF-CESEA’s Science Operations Coordinator, Georgie Zelenak, said they selected EIC’s products not only because of their 15-year track record, but also because of the level of customization available, phenomenal customer service, and our ability to replicate and improve upon the previous configuration, within a very tight time frame. EIC Solutions, Inc. has had continual success with marine applications by providing products that both house and environmentally control sensitive equipment under harsh oceanic conditions.
