The Challenge

GreenPowerMonitor  developed a tool specifically for solar parks that utilize SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems for remote monitoring and control. This system allows control over generation assets, and displays data to illustrate the solar park’s status in real time. The SCADA system requires industrial servers to be installed at remote locations that are exposed to extreme environments, from the high elevation ranch lands of Colorado to humid, hot lowlands of Arkansas. GPM’s control system must be of the highest reliability in order instantaneously modulate the output of the solar power plant to match the demands of the grid. The continuous functionality of the industrial server is crucial to support the control system. Housing this equipment in an outdoor control room would extend the projects timeline due to the costly permits required and increase construction time. GPM needed a compact, cost effective, and reliable solution to house and protect their equipment so they contacted EIC Solutions.

The Solution

Since GPM’s customers are all over the world, EIC Solutions had to appropriately size each individual cooling/heating solution to ensure the servers were protected from local conditions.  The enclosures were also designed specifically for each location’s equipment configuration.  EIC Solution’s Protector™ Rack Series Electronic Equipment Enclosure was the ideal solution and offers the flexibility to meet the requirements of the various solar plants.  EIC provided the G482436-RM Protector™ Rack Series enclosure with the following standard features:

  • 14 Gauge, steel construction
  •  ANSI 61 gray powder coat finish inside and out
  • NEMA 4 rating for indoor or outdoor use
  • 3 point locking latch
  • Horizontal strut for mounting rack rails

Location-specific options and customizations were as follows:

  • ¾” insulation
  •  Integration of customer specified 19” server rails
  • Floor mount bolt down legs, or pole mount brackets and hardware
  • Internal stationary shelves
  • Air conditioners ranging from 4,500-6,000 BTU with heating ranging from 400-900 Watts to properly maintain a safe operating temperature in a wide variety of environments
  • Ethernet connectivity option for remote diagnostics of heating/cooling system

EIC Solutions provided cost-effective and reliable products that were deployed to numerous remote locations to house and protect the SCADA servers. Because GPM utilized EIC Solutions Protector™ Rack Series to secure and environmentally control their equipment, the in-plant SCADA  tool is protected from downtime and failure due to extreme weather. This allows seamless monitoring and management of plant status with control over processes and parameters including:

  • Power  Factor Adjustment
  • Voltage Regulation
  • Data and Status Acquisition
  • Frequency Control
  • Operational Curtailment/Reduction
  • Ramp Rate Control

Benefits/Results

EIC Solutions provided a product that allowed GPM control systems to be deployed anywhere in the world without requiring an expensive control room structure, saving time and money and eliminating the need to obtain additional construction permits. Integrating the Ethernet connectivity option provided the customer real time monitoring of temperatures within their enclosures which was ideal for their remote locations.  The final product was a complete package designed for GPM’s specific requirements for each location, minimizing installation time and optimizing the functionality of the server.  If you have sensitive equipment subject to extreme climates, contact EIC Solutions to review your application.
