The customer serves clients in the petroleum extraction/refining, mining and hydrocarbon industries. EIC was presented with the need for cost-effective air conditioning of the enclosures to be used to protect electronics in drilling rig equipment. Among the types of equipment being used were mud-pumps, drilling motors, and TDSUs (top dry systems units). The electronics and circuitry in the equipment is occasionally exposed to explosive atmospheres requiring Class 1, Division 2 products. Typical Class I locations include petroleum refineries, gasoline storage and dispensing areas, spray finishing areas, aircraft hangars and fuel servicing areas.

Previously, only the 400 BTU model could be used for both indoor and outdoor protection against environmental factors such as the windblown dust and water (rain, sleet, snow, and hose). The 800 and 1500 BTU hazardous location models were rated NEMA 12 and were for indoor use only -- basically in applications that did not require washdowns.

The US military developed new technologies for IED defeat and detection systems for use in Iraq and Afghanistan. These systems utilized sophisticated sensors and electronics in order to detect the presence of roadside bombs and other improvised explosive devices. The working environment for these systems presented a significant challenge to the designers as the sensitive electronics would be subjected to the extremes of Middle East weather including: daily average temperatures from 48 degree C (120 Fahrenheit) in July and August to below freezing in January; a significant rainy season producing up to 100 centimeters a year in some places; and severe wind phenomena with massive dust storms and very dry, desiccating air.
