EIC Solutions, Inc., a leading manufacturer of thermoelectric air conditioners, electronic enclosures and transit cases, has expanded its line of ThermoTEC™ thermoelectric coolers with the addition of a high ambient temperature model. The new, high heat units are capable of sustained, peak performance in environments with temperatures as high as 170 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, select models can be configured to operate in ambient temperatures up to 190 degrees Fahrenheit. EIC ThermoTEC high ambient air conditioners are used for cooling electronic enclosures in extremely hot settings such as in deserts, or in high heat industrial applications such as those near blast furnaces.

For efficient and effective cooling in high heat environments, thermoelectric coolers offer significant advantages over traditional cooling methods such as compressor-based air conditioners. Said Dave Bates, EIC Operations Manager, “In electronic enclosures located, for example, in a desert, with daily temperature readings of one hundred plus degrees, I need a cooler that remains efficient as the ambient air heats up.” Bates explained that in high heat environments, the cooling capacity of compressor air conditioners is limited because very hot external temperatures make it harder for the system to transfer the enclosure heat energy out through the condenser coils into the ambient air. “This is because as ambient air temperature increases,” continued Bates, “condensers become less effective at lowering the vapor temperature in the coils.”

Bates said that during normal operation, compressor air conditioners generate high temperatures and pressures. “When air temperature is particularly hot, these temperatures and pressures can rise high enough to damage the compressor and/or motor. As a precaution, safety switches are built in which automatically shut the system down. So the higher the ambient air temperature, the more likely the unit is to shut down.” Bates said thermoelectric units are unaffected by high ambient temperatures. “It’s intrinsic to thermoelectric design that the hotter the hot side of the module, the colder the cold side. This is why thermoelectric coolers are usually found in electronic enclosures located in particularly hot environments. ”

EIC high ambient heat units are NEMA 4X rated for indoor or outdoor use to provide protection against rain, sleet, snow, windblown dust and corrosion. In addition, solid-state electronics and a lack of moving parts (except for fans) means thermoelectric cooling systems are low maintenance and can operate without servicing for long periods of time. Low maintenance and efficient cooling in high heat environments make EIC units particularly well suited for virtually any electronic enclosure cooling application where ambient air temperatures are high and access to enclosures is limited or difficult.

Made in the USA, EIC thermoelectric air conditioners are used to cool electronic enclosures and transit cases containing controls, computers, cameras, telecom equipment and other electronic/electrical gear. A wide range of sizes is offered from 200 to 2500 BTU. Thermoelectric units offer temperature control to within fractions of a degree.
