EIC Helps Protect Active Energy Solutions’ Lithium-Ion Battery Systems and Power Electronics

Market

Engineering and Manufacturing of Lithium-Ion Battery Systems and Power Electronics

Application

Thermal Control of the Battery’s Storage Container

EIC ThermoTEC 120 series 200 BTU
Active Energy Solutions (AES) uses EIC’s ThermoTEC 120 series 200 BTU thermoelectric air conditioner to ensure that their lithium-ion battery systems and power electronics are protected from harsh environments.

Active Energy Solutions (AES), specializes in the design, engineering, and manufacturing of lithium-ion battery systems and power electronics primarily for data centers, telecommunications, and alternative energy industries with product lines including UPS solutions (AC6000) and PDU Solutions. AES was formed in 2006 as a subsidiary of Methode Inc. who engages primarily in the design, manufacture, and marketing of devices employing electrical, radio remote control, electronic, wireless, and sensing technologies.  AES’ battery systems are designed to flawlessly integrate with Methode’s DCIM and PDU Solutions.

A significant challenge in designing a lithium-ion battery system is thermal regulation. Regular exposure to high temperatures causes degradation of the battery’s life cycle.  The only way to avoid this issue is through thermal control of the battery’s storage container.  While searching for a cooling solution for a new, ruggedized UPS system, AES Engineer and Project Manager, Chuck Kreuter, came upon EIC’s ThermoTEC 120 series 200 BTU thermoelectric air conditioner.

The 200 BTU proved to be the best option because of its stand-out features including:

  • solid-state cooler 200 BTU Solid state design
  • Peltier cooling technology
  • Rugged, stainless steel construction
  • Flexible power options
  • Multiple mounting configurations

The compact 200 BTU solid-state cooler allows the equipment to operate in ambient temperatures up to 122°F (50°C) while keeping the internal battery system below its maximum operating temperature. Since high temperature shortens the life of the battery, EIC’s Cooler mitigates these effects ensuring safe and reliable operation.

The 200 BTU Cooler is being used in the Outdoor Remote Battery (ORB) system. The ORB is a lithium-ion back-up system that can accept a wide range of AC input voltages and provide clean, regulated DC power.

Applications for this system include:

  • Power back-up for wireless access points
  • Security cameras/lights
  • Telecom equipment, etc.

The addition of EIC’s ThermoTEC 200 BTU successfully kept the battery systems up and running.  This gives AES a leading advantage as avoiding downtime due to overheating and shortened battery life-cycle in the Security and Power Industries is paramount.  Mr. Kreuter added, “Working with EIC Solutions has been very enjoyable. They have provided us with prompt customer service and have been extremely accommodating to our design requirements and configuration requests.”

When looking to avoid costly downtime and unexpected heat-related failures, EIC Solutions has an equipment-cooling solution to fit any application.  Contact one of EIC’s knowledgeable sales engineers today for a complete application review.
