Electric Start Systems for Gas Turbine Packages
Mendenhall Technical Services, Inc. (MTSI) is an independent and quality certified (ISO 9001:2008, AS9100:2009 Rev C, GE Spec # S-1000) gas turbine packaging organization with engineering, design, and project management experience extending more than 30 years. They bring the unique capability of being able to deliver custom engineered solutions ranging from 1500KW to over 40MW of power in both commercial and military applications. MTSI is also a capable power plant system designer, able to provide support where customer requirements dictate. Founded in January of 1980 by Robert Mendenhall, this group of managers, engineers, designers, and tradespeople work cooperatively to deliver on time quality solutions to a very sophisticated and diverse customer base. Their clients span industries such as:
MTSI’s turnkey electric-start systems for gas turbine packages must operate in the harsh engine room environment found aboard military warships. These systems include a turbine-mounted starter motor, a control cabinet, and interface cables. The cabinet houses and protects VFD’s and PLC’s, and is designed for an engine room environment. The VFD provides motor power and speed control, while the PLC sequences system operation and monitors temperatures. These systems are critical to the ship propulsion and must function under high heat, vibration, and shock loads.
A compressor-based cabinet cooler would not be able to withstand the vibration and corrosive sea air present in the engine room of a ship. Since MTSI’s engineers had seen EIC’s thermoelectric air conditioners in other successful shipboard applications, they decided to contact EIC. After discussing how to reduce the heat within their VFD and PLC enclosure, two modified ThermoTEC 145 series 1500 BTU thermoelectric air conditioners were recommended to be mounted to the enclosure. These specialized units featured:
EIC’s thermoelectric air conditioners were a perfect fit for MTSI’s application. They had the ability to maintain the IP54 rating of the cabinet while adequately cooling the housed equipment. More importantly, these customized solid-state coolers were robust enough to withstand the high level of vibration and corrosive environment found in the engine rooms of military marine vessels. This robust cooling solution continues to operate under extreme shipboard conditions. If you require a cooling system that will be subject to vibration, corrosive air, or high heat, contact one of EIC’s knowledgeable Sales Engineers today.
