Protection Against Heat for Sensitive Electronics (Part 2)

Temperature-sensitive electronics operate in a wide array of applications and industries. Computers and other sensitive electronic devices are being used increasingly in environments where they’re being subjected to hostile and inhospitable surroundings. High temperatures, contaminant-laden air, and humid and corrosive atmospheres can wreak havoc on electronic equipment. Few companies today can afford the costs and inconvenience associated with repairs, downtime, and lost data due to inadequate protection of their operation-critical electronic equipment. Oftentimes, electronic failure due to a harsh environment or unwanted heat can be prevented with a compact, lightweight, thermoelectric cooling system.

The utilization of thermoelectric cooling systems to cool electronic enclosures provides a number of significant advantages when compared to other cooling methods such as compressor-based air conditioners. These include:

Reliability: A nuclear power plant approached EIC Solutions because they were unhappy with the failure rates and maintenance levels of their existing compressor-based cooling system. Thermoelectric air conditioners are highly reliable due to their solid-state construction. Although reliability is somewhat application dependent, the life (MTBF) of a thermoelectric module in a typical thermoelectric cooling system is greater than 150,000 hours. In comparison, the life (MTBF) of a compressor in typical refrigerant-based system is less than 100,000 hours.

Adaptability: Thermoelectric air conditioners were used by a national security company in need of a solution that could provide both cooling and heating for the housing enclosure’s camera systems used for license plate recognition at select US border crossings. Extreme cold can be as damaging to electronic components as extreme heat. For outdoor enclosures in regions that experience extreme variances in temperatures throughout the year, systems that can both heat and cool provide a way to protect sensitive equipment year round.

Maintenance: When our nation’s defense is on the line, EIC’s cooling solutions were used by a major defense contractor with providing air conditioned remote surveillance housing enclosures at US ballistic missile sites. A thermoelectric cooling system has few moving parts and no filters, freon or oil, so it is virtually maintenance free, with the only moving parts being the fans used to circulate the air across the heat sinks. Compressor based systems require the periodic changing of filters and charging of the refrigerant.

Environmentally Friendly: An important aspect of our products to consider is the significant environmental benefits they offer. Unlike compressor-based air conditioners, EIC provides thermoelectric air conditioners that do not need chemical refrigerants (CFCs, HCFCs or oils) that are harmful to the environment. Our thermoelectric coolers require virtually no maintenance as our only moving parts are fans.
